The 2023 Annual James A. Cooper Memorial Lecture in Cherokee Studies will be delivered by Benjamin E. Frey Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 201 of the Apodaca Science Building and Thursday, Nov. 9, at 5:30 p.m. in the T.J. Holland Education Room at the Museum of the Cherokee People in Cherokee. Frey's talk is titled “May History Show Us the Way: Roots of Cherokee Language Endangerment and Paths for Reclamation.”
Frey is an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. His research focuses on language revitalization and the link between social networks, institutional structures and language behavior over time.
The lecture is sponsored by the WCU Sequoyah Professorship, the Cherokee Studies Program, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Museum of the Cherokee People.
