Paintings by America Meredith on display at Fine Art Museum

Western Carolina University’s Fine Art Musuem is currently featuring an exhibition titled “Outspoken: Paintings by America Meredith.”
Meredith, an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, will have her work on display through May 3. Meredith, who also is a curator and publishing editor of First American Art Magazine, uses visual art and writing to address important issues in the Native community. Her work celebrates Cherokee language and culture, examines changing customs and challenges Native American stereotypes.
Her paintings are in the collections of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.; the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma; the Heard Museum in Phoenix; and the National Collection of Contemporary Indian Arts in Sante Fe, New Mexico.
A reception for “Outspoken” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Fine Art Museum. Meredith will hold a gallery talk at 5:45 p.m. Regular museum hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
