10th annual Cullowhee Canoe Slalom to be held on Tuckaseigee River
The 10th annual Cullowhee Canoe Slalom, a family friendly paddling competition on a calm section of the Tuckaseigee River near the Western Carolina University campus, will be held on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 21.

Competition will begin at 9 a.m. at the Locust Creek put-in, just downstream from the greenway bridge on Old Cullowhee Road. The event offers both individual and partner events with canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.
Participants are asked to arrive before 9 a.m. on race day to check the start board for their race number and start times. Parking at the site is limited, and carpooling is suggested. An awards ceremony will be held about 30 minutes after the last run.
Canoes, paddles and personal flotation devices will be provided, but only a few kayaks and paddle boards will be available so kayakers and paddle boarders may want to bring their own boats. All participants should have closed-toe shoes, money for the on-site food truck, a water bottle and clothes that can get wet.
Registration is $8 per person/per event online and $10 on the day of the event. Online registration is available at learn.wcu.edu/canoe-slalom.
The course will be open for practice from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20.
Event hosts are students from WCU’s Parks and Recreation Management Program and the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department. Proceeds will benefit the Parks and Recreation Management Scholarship Fund.
