‘Japanese Language and Culture’ course offered at Biltmore Park

Western Carolina University’s Office of Professional Growth and Enrichment is offering a course titled “Introductory Japanese Language and Culture” on Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. beginning Oct. 22 and continuing through Nov. 19 at the university’s instructional site at Biltmore Park in Asheville.

“This is a great opportunity to start learning Japanese,” said course instructor Soichiro Motohashi, a member of the faculty in WCU’s Department of World Languages. “This introductory language and culture course is designed for anyone interested in language as well as the traditional and contemporary culture of Japan.”

Motohashi grew up in Japan and moved to the U.S. in 2008. He holds a master's degree in applied linguistics and has been teaching Japanese language and culture for more than nine years.

Course topics include the basics of Japanese conversation, cultural activities and the basic Japanese writing system. No previous knowledge of the Japanese language is required.
