Reception for ‘Defining America’ exhibition set at Fine Art Museum

A reception is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, to mark the opening of the “Defining America” exhibition at Western Carolina University’s Fine Art Museum.
The event will include a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m., followed by refreshments.
Inspired by WCU’s 2018-19 interdisciplinary learning theme of the same name, “Defining America” brings together artists with varying perspectives on the concept of “America” and asks visitors to reflect on the values, definitions and assumptions attached to that concept.
The "Defining America" exhibition includes this piece, Randy Shull's acrylic on wood panel "Simultaneous Pattern."
Featured artists include Trenton Doyle Hancock, Ramiro Gomez, Nari Ward, Tom Sachs, Javier Tellez, Randy Shull, Shan Goshorn, Porge Buck and Martin DeWitt, along with Kevin Bradley and Julie Belcher of Yeehaw Press. DeWitt retired in 2010 as founding director of WCU's Fine Art Museum.
The exhibition will be on view at the museum until May 3, 2019.
