Aging & Accessibility
According to the 2021 North Carolina Aging Profile, there were 9,033 residents that were 65 years old or older in Jackson County (NC Department of Health and Human Services). The total population of Jackson County in 2021 was 42,613, making the senior residents about 21% of Jackson County’s population. Seniors are a vulnerable population, especially in rural Jackson County.
The services offered in Jackson County and the Western North Carolina region aim to assist seniors that may be homebound, have a hard time accessing vital resources, and combating isolation. The agencies in this county and region have a far-reaching impact on the struggles that seniors in Jackson County face. Caregivers to seniors are also in need of education and resources to help them serve their loved ones, especially if their loved ones have intense healthcare needs.

A long-term aid facility for the elderly, Autumn Care provides one-on-one care, serving meals, and provides craft and exercise classes and special events services. Autumn Care also offers short-term rehabilitation services. Volunteers may help with Bingo, visit residents one-on-one, and assist with craft classes. |

Project F.I.R.E. (Fuel Intervention for Rural Elderly) is a heating assistance program that cuts, splits, and delivers firewood to elderly in need. This project is part of the Jackson County Department on Aging. |
