Lena Pearl Dula Mayberry Engstrom taught school for 45 years, pioneered advanced placement classes, graduated from Western Carolina University twice and N.C. State, studied at Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge universities, plus Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill, and ensured her most gifted students got into college with financial aid by taking them directly to university administrators to show them off.Read More
Harold and Henrietta Saltz Anderson may have made their fortune farming in the shadow of the Grand Coulee Dam in central Washington state, but they never forgot their roots in Western North Carolina. When the couple died – Henrietta in 1995, and Harold in 2016 – with no children of their own, they left behind "seed money," so to speak, to Western Carolina University.Read More
They were hiking buddies for sure, and world travelers, and hard-working professionals who made a life in their own backyard of Brevard so they could stay close to their aging parents.
