John Whitmire named 2019 recipient of the Faculty Award for Excellence in Student Service
The Faculty Award for Excellence in Student Service is presented to a dedicated faculty member who understands that learning also occurs outside the classroom, and is more than an instructor; but is also a mentor. We see this person interact with students and take a holistic approach to support student development.
As the 2019 recipient, Whitmire recognizes the importance of the objectives set by Student Success, and supports those objectives by taking extra time and care in service to our students.
John Whitmire was also named recipient of UNC Board of Governors teaching honor for 2019. Whitmire "grabs his students’ attention at the start of each semester by telling them that he really doesn’t care what they think."
About the Department
In WCU's Philosophy and Religion Department we challenge our students to answer fundamental
questions about the nature of reality and our understanding of it; about the meaning
and value in our lives; and our relationship with each other, to the natural world,
and our environment. Our faculty instructors illuminate the world of ancient and modern
ideas and ideals through stimulating courses on important topics in pursuit of serious
academic research.
