Teaching Below Zero

North Carolina native finds meaningful work teaching at remote Alaska school. Michelle Stephens ’17 had a few adjustments to make when she moved from Western North Carolina to Selawik, Alaska, three years ago to teach elementary school. But they weren’t anything a good day of ice fishing couldn’t fix.

Although as challenging as it has been for our students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members, we never allowed the pandemic to hinder the work we are doing to deliver a quality, affordable, educational experience.

Homecoming 2021 to be ‘Roaring with Pride’

“Roaring with Pride” will be the theme for Homecoming 2021 at Western Carolina University, with a variety of festivities scheduled from Thursday, Oct. 7, through Sunday, Oct. 10. Highlights include the homecoming game against Mercer, performances by the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band, a series of alumni brunches, tailgating parties, and receptions, plus tours of the new, state-of-the-art Apodaca Science Building along with the traditional parade through downtown Sylva.

University seeks public feedback in updating its campus master plan

WCU is in the process of updating its 2014 Campus Master Plan and will hold two virtual forums to allow for public feedback.
