Meet Our New Mascot

Mountain Boomer

Welcome Western Carolina University students and alumni to your first day as a Mountain Boomer. In 1932, a campuswide contest was held to choose our mascot. The choices were the Catamounts and Mountain Boomers.

Interestingly, the runner-up mascot in that contest was the Mountain Boomers. After decades of being one of two universities in the country to share the Catamounts name, WCU will now be the one and only Mountain Boomers. For those who don’t know, a mountain boomer is a small ground squirrel that scampers about the woods and is extremely difficult to catch. We’re hoping the same will be true of the WCU Mountain Boomers’ athletic teams.

From this day forward, purple and gold Mountain Boomers will be seen in abundance across our Cullowhee campus, as well as our Biltmore Park instructional site in Asheville. Wear your new Boomers’ gear proudly, which features Boomer leading his team to victory in his “W” sweater and hat.

And one last thing. If you’ve read this far, April Fools!
