Western Carolina University student fees and rates for the 2022-23 academic year have been approved by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, including an $86 per year increase for athletic program support.

The athletic program fees will go from the current $782 to $868 per year, for the next two years, to help cover the cost of facilities needs as identified in the athletics department master plan. Upon independent inspection, much was determined to be in dilapidated, outdated and damaged condition.

“We would like to thank the UNC Board of Governors for their positive vote,” said Alex Gary, WCU’s director of athletics. “Some of our athletic facilities have served well beyond their life expectancy and are in desperate need of renovation, repair or replacement. Coupled with a significant fundraising campaign, the vote today will go a long way in helping us address much needed renovations. Catamount Athletics looks forward to continuing our facility master planning process and working with our alumni and donors to help make progress toward our vision.”

The approval came Thursday, Feb. 24, during the regular Board of Governors meeting in Chapel Hill. WCU’s Board of Trustees had endorsed the fee schedule at its regular quarterly meeting Dec. 3, 2021.
