Western Carolina University’s annual Homecoming Parade in downtown Sylva has been cancelled due to weather forecasters’ prediction of heavy rain.

The annual event, which was set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, was scheduled to include a wide array of student and community floats, along with WCU’s cheerleaders, dance team and Homecoming Court, and the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band.

“We truly regret that the threat of inclement weather is forcing us to cancel this year’s event, especially after having to postpone the activity last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Marty Ramsey, WCU’s director of alumni engagement. “We do encourage alumni, friends and other visitors who are in the area for Homecoming weekend to participate in other activities we have scheduled.”

All other Homecoming events are still scheduled to take place, including tailgating and other activities associated with Saturday’s Southern Conference football game pitting the Catamounts against Mercer University at 3:30 p.m. at E.J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field.
