WCU to offer online introduction to Cherokee course

Western Carolina University’s Office of Professional Growth and Enrichment will be offering a four-week online introduction to Cherokee course entitled “Cherokee 101 – Online,” July 6-31.

“This course will be held entirely online, with bi-weekly Zoom meetings, and is designed to combine Total Physical Response methodologies with digital media to create a language learning environment suitable for safe distance education,” said Bobby Hensley, WCU’s associate director of continuing education.

The class will introduce participants to the Cherokee language and culture through vocabulary modeled around experiencing and expressing the five senses. By the end of this course, participants will be able to describe common experiences in their everyday lives through simple Cherokee sentences.

Rainy Brake, instructor in WCU’s Anthropology and Sociology Department, will serve as instructor for the course.

Registration fee is $129. EBCI members and Veterans of the US Armed Forces may register for $89. For more information and to register, visit http://learn.wcu.edu/language.
