Impending rain forces cancellation of WCU's Homecoming Parade in downtown Sylva

With rain moving into the mountains of Western North Carolina and weather forecasters’ predictions of a soggy evening, organizers of Western Carolina University’s annual Homecoming Parade in downtown Sylva have canceled the event set for later today (Friday, Oct. 25).

The parade – originally scheduled to start at 6 p.m. with a wide array of student and community floats, along with WCU’s cheerleaders, dance team, Homecoming Court and Pride of the Mountains Marching Band – will not be rescheduled.

“The Homecoming Parade has become a great tradition and a wonderful way to connect the Western Carolina University campus community with our neighbors in Sylva and across Jackson County,” said Marty Ramsey, WCU’s director of alumni engagement. “We truly regret that the threat of inclement weather is forcing us to cancel this year’s event, but we do encourage alumni, friends and other visitors who are in the area for Homecoming weekend to visit downtown Sylva and take advantage of the wide array of dining, entertainment and shopping opportunities.”

All other Homecoming events are still scheduled to take place, including tailgating and other activities associated with Saturday’s Southern Conference football game pitting WCU’s Catamounts against the Paladins of Furman University.

More information about Homecoming activities is available online at go.wcu.edu/homecoming or by calling the WCU Office of Alumni Engagement at 828-227-7335 or toll-free 877-440-9990.
