Western Carolina University’s 19th annual Tournament of Champions high school band competition took place Saturday, Oct. 19 – sort of.
The competition, which was originally scheduled to feature 23 high school bands from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee, was reduced to just seven when all-day rain forced the event to be moved inside the Ramsey Regional Activity Center as a “standstill” event.
Rather than compete, five bands from Georgia (Mill Creek High School, Ola High School, Lassiter High School, Kennesaw Mountain High School and Walton High School), James F. Byrnes High School from South Carolina and South Caldwell High School from North Carolina performed standing still and received commentary from the judges. Each school was awarded a trophy.
WCU’s Pride of the Mountains Marching Band did not perform as was originally scheduled. To learn more about the Pride of the Mountains or to support its upcoming performance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, visit go.wcu.edu/macys.
