Poet, editor and essayist John Hoppenthaler will read from his work at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in Room 304 of Western Carolina University’s Coulter Building.
Hoppenthaler is a professor of English at East Carolina University and the author of three collections from Carnegie Mellon University Press – “Lives of Water,” “Anticipate the Coming Reservoir” and “Domestic Garden,” 2015 winner of the North Carolina Poetry Society’s Brockman-Campbell Award for the best volume of poetry published by a North Carolinian.
Hoppenthaler’s work has appeared in publications such as New York Magazine, the North Carolina Literary Review and Southern Humanities Review. He has served in literary positions as diverse as Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet for his region and Toni Morrison’s personal assistant.
Kevin Dublin of Poetry International wrote that Hoppenthaler is a poet “capable of taking personal moments and through beautiful lyric force and distillation, making them into persona poems that are a part of the deep waters of our collective human consciousness.”
The reading is sponsored by WCU’s Department of English. For more information, contact Catherine Carter at 828-227-3931.
