Western Carolina University’s Division of Educational Outreach is offering a Nature Exploration Camp and a Science Laboratory Camp this summer in Cullowhee.

Both camps will be led by Max Lanning, a science teacher at Swain County High School and WCU alumnus.

The Nature Exploration Camp, to be held June 24-28 for rising sixth- through ninth-graders, will give participants a chance to explore the natural world through field trips and activities throughout Western North Carolina. The students will visit sites such as Highlands Biological Station, Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Nantahala National Forest, and participate in activities such as hiking, botanizing, bird watching, river snorkeling, and observing and collecting salamanders and insects.

The fee for the Nature Exploration Camp is $279, with lunch provided each day.

The second opportunity for rising sixth- through ninth-graders is the Science Laboratory Camp, which will be held July 8-12. Students will get a chance to explore laboratory science through activities and experiments in biology, chemistry, geosciences and other topics on WCU’s Cullowhee campus.

Participants will be working in an authentic lab environment and will participate in activities that include chemical reactions, DNA extraction, water quality testing, geographic information systems and more.

The fee for the Science Laboratory Camp is $199, with lunch provided each day.
