Events around Earth Day to include awards banquet, Mount Trashmore

Monday, April 22, is Earth Day, but Western Carolina University will host several events throughout the week to celebrate.

Starting on Earth Day, students, faculty and staff can enjoy an Earth Day-inspired lunch from Campus Dining Services from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the A.K. Hinds University Center Grandroom.

On Tuesday, April 23, the Celebrate Excellence Awards Banquet will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. in the conference room of Blue Ridge hall. This year’s event will feature the inaugural WCU Sustainability Champion Awards, which will be given to one student and one faculty/staff member who has demonstrated significant effort to improve sustainability on campus.

Mount Trashmore will take place on Wednesday, April 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the UC lawn. During the event, the majority of trash that is accumulated in a day will be emptied and whatever is recyclable will be sorted out. Information will be shared on recycling on campus and freebies will be passed out.

Also, on that day, there will be three opportunities to do community service – at the Cullowhee Community Garden, assist with Mount Trashmore, or assist Habitat for Humanity. For more information and to sign up, email Kaitlin Ritchie at kkritchie@wcu.edu.

The third annual Trashion Show will take place on Thursday, April 25, at 5 p.m. in the UC Grandroom. Hosted by WCU’s Eco Cats, the Trashion Show allows contestants to show off their artistic talent by creating clothing out of trash or recyclables. Prizes and trophies will be given to the top winners.
