Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet to perform benefit program in Sylva

Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet

The Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet will perform a special program of “Christmas Brass” to benefit victims of the California wildfires on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the Jackson County Public Library in Sylva.

The Jackson County Public Library is located in the old county courthouse.

The free event begins at 6 p.m. and will feature holiday favorites, as well as several sing-alongs. Donations will be accepted to aid those in need after the fires, which have left thousands homeless and claimed more than 80 lives, with another 200 missing.

The quintet was formed in 1993 and has since performed nationally and internationally, with a wide repertoire that includes pop, jazz, patriotic and standards, as well as commissioned works.

The SMBQ is from Sylva and made up of faculty with Western Carolina University’s School of Music. Members are P. Bradley Ulrich, trumpet; David Ginn, trumpet; Travis Bennett, horn; Mike Schallock, tuba; and Zsolt Szabo, trombone.
