‘Presentation Skills for Women’ workshop scheduled in Asheville

Western Carolina University’s Office of Professional Growth and Enrichment is offering a “Powerful Presentation Skills for Women” workshop from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at the university’s instructional site at Biltmore Park in Asheville.

Betty Farmer, award-winning WCU professor of communication and owner of Farmer Communications, will serve as workshop instructor.

“This is a great opportunity for women to hone their presentation skills for a variety of situations,” said Farmer. “This workshop provides a safe and supportive environment for women to freely share concerns, take risks and support each other through lively group interaction and constructive feedback.”

In the first part of the workshop, participants will learn how to “meet and greet” with ease. Participants also will develop and practice a 30-second “elevator pitch” or self-introduction that can be tailored to a variety of situations.

In the second half of the workshop, participants will improve their command of the verbal, vocal and visual elements of public speaking by developing and delivering a two-minute story.

“The ability to tell a story is increasingly recognized as an essential public speaking skill,” Farmer said. “We are more likely to connect with and be persuaded by people who tell stories well.”

This workshop is open to women only. The registration fee is $119 and includes a catered lunch.
