Weekend of dance will include ‘Light Chasers,’ Bolshoi Ballet
A long weekend of dance will be featured on the Western Carolina University campus Thursday, Dec. 6, through Sunday, Dec. 9, with a staging of the dance production “Light Chasers” and a screening of the Bolshoi Ballet’s performance of “Don Quixote.”
An original piece from WCU’s School of Stage and Screen, “Light Chasers” will be presented
in Hoey Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 through Saturday, Dec. 8. The piece is based
on the band Cloud Cult’s 2010 concept album of the same name.
“The album has been transformed, with the band’s permission and excitement, into a unique dance production never before seen at WCU,” said Jill Jacobs, marketing manager for WCU’s John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center.
Influenced by the music and their own experiences, the story is an original creation from the minds of Jayme McGhan, director of the School of Stage and Screen; Ashlee Wasmund, dance program director; and Liz Borom of the dance faculty. McGhan is directing the piece, with Wasmund and Borom providing original choreography. “Students ranging from freshmen to seniors in the Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts tell this original story of love, loss and everything else in between,” Jacobs said.

Continuing the weekend of dance, the Bardo Arts Center will present a screening of “Don Quixote” from the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow at 3 p.m. Dec. 9, Part of the center’s Sunday Cinema Series, the screening is $5 for students; $10 for faculty and staff, and seniors 65 and up; and $15 for adults.

The presentation is a pre-recorded performance shown in high-definition on the big screen in the Bardo Arts Center performance hall.
WCU’s Fine Art Museum will be open from 2 p.m. until the screening begins. Concessions, including wine and beer, will be available for purchase and can be taken inside the performance hall during the screening. To learn more, visit arts.wcu.edu/don-quixote.
