Susan Gardner Mayhorn ’93, one of Western Carolina’s most decorated track and field student-athletes of all
time, was inducted into the Southern Conference Hall of Fame class of 2018 in March,
becoming WCU’s first-ever inductee. Mayhorn, a women’s cross country and track and
field student-athlete from 1989 until 1993, was a 31-time All-Southern Conference
selection and was the 1993 NCAA Woman of the Year for North Carolina colleges and
universities. Upon her induction into the WCU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004, then-coach
Danny Williamson ’84 MAEd ’86 said, “Susie helped lay the foundation for future Southern Conference championships
as she set very high standards for everyone around here. If we had one more Susie
Gardner, we would have won a lot of SoCon Championships.”
