Images captured from action-packed opening for fall semester 2018

WCU returning students and staff members carry a new student's belongings into a residence hall on freshman move-in day. Nearly 1,500 students, faculty and staff volunteered to help the newest Catamounts move into their rooms.

Western Carolina University students, faculty and staff kicked off what is expected to be another record-breaking fall semester over a four-day period, Aug. 17-20.

Members of a freshman class that is predicted to be the university’s largest ever moved into residence halls Friday, Aug. 17, and upperclassmen returned to campus Saturday, Aug. 18, and Sunday, Aug. 19. Many in the student body attended WCU’s welcome-back celebration, Valley Ballyhoo, on Aug. 18, and classes began Monday, Aug. 20.

Final enrollment numbers for fall semester won’t be set until Friday, Aug. 31, but WCU is expected to establish a new record for total enrollment, also.

“Week of Welcome” activities for students continue through Sunday, Aug. 26.

WCU Communications and Public Relations staff photographer Ashley T. Evans captured these images of the opening of fall semester.
