The first screening of Western Carolina University’s new Sunday Cinema Series will be the play “Yerma,” which was originally performed and filmed at the Young Vic Theatre in London.

The screening will be at 3 p.m. in the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Aug. 26. “Yerma,” recipient of a number of five-star reviews, is Simon Stone’s radical production of Federico García Lorca’s original play. It is the story of a woman in her 30s who is desperate to conceive. Her desire for motherhood becomes an obsession, leading her to commit a horrific crime.

The Sunday Cinema Series features encore performances from the National Theatre in London and the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. Concessions will be available.

Subscriptions to the series, which consists of seven screenings, are on sale until Aug. 26. They are $90 for adults, $60 for WCU faculty/staff and seniors, and $25 for students. Individual tickets also are available at $15 for adults, $10 for WCU faculty/staff and seniors, and $5 for students. All seats are general admission.
