BIG REBOUND

A love of basketball has taken Ransford Brempong ’05 around the world. The 37-year-old father of three who played in professional leagues in Germany and the Netherlands and for Canada’s national team after his WCU career is back home in Canada, making a full-time career of teaching basketball skills to young people.

HALL PASS

One of the top football teams in university history headlined a trio of new members of the Western Carolina University Athletics Hall of Fame who were unveiled as the class of 2019 during an induction ceremony held in October.

Bret Beaver, former associate head coach of the Elon University women’s tennis program, joined Western Carolina University as head coach for women’s tennis prior to the beginning of the fall season.

Courtney Gunter, former assistant women’s golf coach at Coastal Carolina University, is reading the greens and hitting the fairways at Western Carolina University after being named head coach of the women’s golf team over the summer.

Long gone are the days when Baxter Wood ’58 MAEd ’63, former director of A.K. Hinds University Center, hauled members of Western Carolina University’s men’s basketball team to away games in his new 1958 Chrysler New Yorker or when community members took out personal loans to field the football team, repaid with gate receipts at the end of the season.

David Starnes, director of the award-winning Pride of the Mountains Marching Band, will be inducted into the Bands of America Hall of Fame in March.
