Cultural heritage websites and digitization projects are new ways to share historic images with the public. Publishing historic photographs online helps preserve them, making it unnecessary for people to continually handle – and possibly damage – fragile materials. The images on this site were gathered from public collections, and then scanned, tagged, and uploaded into Hunter Library’s digital archive. Many of these images are from Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, Hunter Library’s partners in its “From the Hands of our Elders” project. You can browse the entire collection or search, using specific key words.
