The Nurse Educator Certificate requires 12 semester hours of study and can be completed in three to four semesters.

The streamlined format allows students to balance coursework with their schedules while gaining essential knowledge in curriculum design and learner support.

Program Description

The Nurse Educator post master’s certificate is available for those students who have earned a Master of Science in Nursing (M.S. or M.S.N.) degree or those with a master’s degree in a related discipline.

The postgraduate degree prepares nurses in an advanced practice role with competency in one of three educational areas: academic educator, staff educator, or patient educator.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the admissions criteria established by the Graduate School, the program also requires the following:

- GPA and/or previous degree and coursework

- Applicants must posess a B.S.N. from a regionally accredited college or university and a nationally accredited nursing program with at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale for the last 60 hours of undergraduate work.

- The candidate must have graduated from a nationally accredited master's program in nursing (M.S. or MSN) or a master’s degree in a related discipline.

Nurse Educator Professional Statement

The online certificate prepares nurses for the role of nurse educator with competencies in three educational areas:

- Academic Educator

- Staff Educator

- Patient Educator

Required Coursework

- Graduate or undergraduate level statistics course

- Undergraduate nursing research course

- Essay or Narrative Statement

- A professional statement is required.

- Letters of Recommendation

- Three letters of recommendation including one from a current or recent supervisor are required.

Resume and/or Experience

Applicants must be a registered nurse eligible for licensure in the state where the student intends to practice.

- Must have one year of clinical nursing experience within the past five years.

- A resume is required.

- A virtual interview is required.

This flexible program provides advanced training in instructional methods, curriculum development, assessment strategies, and hands-on practicum experiences to prepare graduates for educator roles in academic and clinical settings.

Curriculum and Costs

Degree Requirements:

The Nurse Educator Certificate requires 12 semesters hours of coursework. New students are admitted for the Fall or Spring semesters.

Additional expenses include textbooks at approximately $800 per year.

NSG 651 - Teaching/Learning in Nursing Education Credits: 3

NSG 653 - Test and Measurement Credits: 3

NSG 687 - Practicum in Nursing Education Credits: 2 with 120 clock hours
May also be taken in the Fall semester

Fall Semester

NSG 652 - Curriculum Development Credits: 3

NSG 687 - Practicum in Nursing Education Credits: 2 with 120 clock hours
May also be taken in the Summer semester

An Independent Study is also required to complete the Nurse Educator Certificate.

Admitted students are required to be computer literate and either own or have regular access to a computer, high-speed Internet access, and video capability.
