University Scholar Award

The University Scholar Award is designed to recognize research and creative activities. This award is given to a faculty member who has achieved a position of prominence in his or her discipline through creative research activities. Examples of distinguished achievements include research, publications, grant receipts, art exhibitions, works of art, fine arts performances, and literary works.

Award

  • $5,000 and engraved plaque
  • Award presented at Spring Convocation
  • The application materials are to be submitted as an electronic document to rstiles@email.wcu.edu. (Letters of support may be mailed directly to the Graduate School and Research or included in the electronic document).
  • Hard copy documents will not be accepted.

Eligibility

  • Full-time tenured or tenure track faculty
  • Has been employed at Western Carolina University for at least 3 years
  • Has not received the award in the past 5 years
  • Does not hold an administrative position above Department Head level

Application must contain:

  1. Curriculum vitae
  2. Narrative concerning the scholarly/research contribution at Western Carolina University (No more than 5 pages, single spaced, minimum 10 point font)
    • Describe the research activities at WCU
    • Describe the overall impact of the research
    • Describe how research efforts have contributed to the overall community and scholarship at the university
    • Describe efforts for a continued scholarly agenda
    • Describe the contributions to the education and scholarly developments of students
  3. One internal letter of support
  4. One external letter of support

Evaluation and Rubric

An awards subcommittee of the Faculty Scholarship Advisory Council will review the portfolios and transmit a recommendation through the Dean of Graduate School and Research to the Chancellor.
