The Inclusive Education B.S.Ed. program prepares students to teach in inclusive K-6 settings as either elementary or special education teachers. Students are required to complete an array of courses as well as field and service experiences which prepare them to help students with and without disabilities learn together. Pedagogical content includes child development, educational philosophy, classroom management, language acquisition, English as a second language, and more.

With successful completion of program and licensure requirements, candidates are well prepared to teach students with diverse learning needs and earn a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Inclusive Education. The Pearson licensure exams focus on reading, math, and multi-subject content knowledge.

In 2018, program administrators assessed student performance on their first attempt of each of the required Pearson exams. The program’s target goal was that 90% of Inclusive Education teacher candidates would pass the three Pearson exams on the first attempt. To improve studnt performance, program content has been enhanced through faculty-led improvement efforts.

Dr. Tammy Barron and Dr. Charmion Rush have completed the second year of their NC State Improvement Grant. The NC State Improvement Grant is being used to prepare WCU teacher candidates to provide high quality instruction in reading and math. Dr. Barron and Dr. Rush have completed the course component of reading training and Dr. Adrienne Stuckey has completed the course component of math training. These improvements are implemented through integration of reading concepts into required 400-level courses and the creation of a Math Foundations Workshop for Inclusive Education, Elementary Education, and Birth to Kindergarten teacher candidates.

At the college-level, the program's Coordinator serves on the Professional Examination Preparation (PrEP) Task Force to generate admission exam supports which resulted in a series of 8 skill specific Math Workshops that align with student exam deficit areas. Advisors in Suite 201 also continue to expand and advise Inclusive Education candidates to utilize the extensive number of exam preparation resources available to them at Licensure Exam Preparation
