About the Intensive English Program

The Office of Global Engagement has decided to suspend the Intensive English Program (IEP) starting January 1, 2023.

IEP Classroom

Western Carolina University's Intensive English Program (IEP) is designed for non-native English speakers who have a strong aspiration to improve their language skills. IEP is useful for both working professionals and students preparing for university study or professional programs.

No matter your skill level our small class sizes allow you to receive individualized attention from experienced faculty who hold graduate degrees in linguistics or language teaching. You'll also improve your language skills outside of the classroom through immersive experiences learning American culture in an inclusive community.

OUR PROGRAM

There are three levels of English study: high beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

Instruction and strategies cover reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar as well as special topics such as literature, film, academic research, iBT test-preparation, and culture. You'll receive over 18 hours of in-class language instruction Monday through Friday with a variety of cross-cultural activities throughout the semester.

The Intensive English Program helps international students succeed at WCU. Completion of the WCU IEP fulfills the English language requirement for admission into the undergraduate program here at Western Carolina University.

Additional information about the graduate school requirements are available on the admissions page.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the IEP at Western Carolina University (WCU) is to provide programming to facilitate English language, cross-cultural and academic skills that prepare international students to attend US universities, primarily undergraduate and graduate study at WCU. The IEP supports the educational mission of Western Carolina University through the WCU 20/20 Vision with focus on international outreach to the university and the local community, as well as a commitment to fostering international student academic success, faculty development, and positive teaching and learning environments.

The IEP contributes to the integration of international students into all aspects of campus life and collaborates with faculty, staff and students across campus toward creating a successful academic experience for all international students.
