Comprehensive Education

Secondary (9-12) and Special Subject (K-12) Programs

The School of Teaching and Learning educates prospective Secondary (9-12) and Special Subject (K-12) teachers and current teaching professionals. Both our undergraduate and graduate programs focus on the study and improvement of teaching and learning and provide students with a solid foundation in best instructional practices.

Our undergraduate program enables students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed) in secondary or special subject education and leads to the NC teaching license. Special Subject students can specialize in art, music or Spanish. Secondary education students can select from concentrations in comprehensive English, mathematics, science or social sciences.

Undergraduate Programs

Teachers with earned undergraduate degrees in education may be interested in furthering their training with the Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.) degree. The program leading to the M.A.Ed. degree includes a comprehensive program of graduate study consisting of professional core courses and concentration area courses. Each of the concentrations leads to a recommendation for Advanced Competencies licensure from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Students with a bachelor’s degree in a subject other than education can pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.)  and receive both an advanced degree and teaching licensure at the same time. Students may earn a license to teach grades 9-12 in biology, English, social science or grades K-12 in art.  Admission to the program requires an undergraduate degree in the major of the concentration or a closely related major.
