Language Arts Teacher Leader at The Catamount School

Portrait of Beth Poteat

I currently serve in the role of grades 6-8 English Language Arts teacher at The Catamount School, operated by WCU.  In addition to my responsibilities of learning with my amazingly creative, talented, wonderful students at TCS, I have the pleasure of also teaching college students in the methods of language arts course in the spring.  Another perk of my position at TCS is the opportunity to serve as a clinical educator for students wishing to pursue their own careers as middle grades educators.  Prior to my experience at the lab school, I taught 6-8 English language arts for seven years at Summit Charter School in Cashiers, and one year at Cullowhee Valley School.  I absolutely love getting to spend every day working with the incredibly talented staff at The Catamount School and the fantastic students that we serve.

I’m a proud WCU alumna and North Carolina Teaching Fellow, having earned my Bachelors in English Education in 2008 as well as my Masters in Middle Grade Literacy in 2016. I am also a newly certified National Board-Certified Teacher.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy running (I’ve got my twelfth half marathon this spring!), frolicking outside with my dogs (a shepherd mix, Stella and a Great Dane, Charlie), and spending time with friends and family.

In the future, I’d love to earn my doctorate and continue to work with middle-school aged students as well as those who want to teach middle schoolers!
