Dr. Betty Farmer is an award-winning professor, public relations practitioner, and engaged campus and community leader.
She holds the Ph.D. in Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations and a Master's in Journalism from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in English with a concentration in Communication from the University of Virginia at Wise.
She has worked professionally as a journalist, public relations practitioner and fundraiser, and her scholarship has appeared in the top public relations journals.
Dr. Farmer founded WCU's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America and the student-run PR firm, Catamount Communications, and she continues to work with students outside the classroom on a variety of real-world PR projects. She recently received two awards from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for her work with students in Dillsboro, NC. Dr. Farmer also has received several awards for her teaching. She was the recipient of WCU's College of Arts & Sciences Teaching Award and the Student Affairs Faculty of the Year Award. She received the Outstanding Teaching Award and the Outstanding Graduate Student Award as a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee.
As an active university and community citizen, Dr. Farmer has served on numerous committees and boards. She recently was named WCU's Provost Fellow for Engagement.
