Professors Lori Oxford and Alberto Centeno-Pulido participated in the 2019 edition of the SECOLAS (Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies) conference that took place March 26-31 in the city of Oaxaca, Mexico. The grounds of the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca were the site for the conference. The level and breadth of the presentations in all panels was astounding.

Dr. Oxford presented her research about Ceci Bastida, a Mexican singer who, in spite of her own reluctance to declare herself as such, is arguably an activist for the rights of immigrants and shows it in her songs. Dr. Centeno-Pulido offered a presentation on the work of Argentinian comic artist Marcelo Candía, whose 30-year (plus) career has been commited to the defense of human rights and the reconstruction of Argentinian national memory through his art. Both presentations were very well received by the different attendees to their respective panels.

WCUSpanish, on behalf of Drs. Oxford and Centeno-Pulido, would like to thank the organizers of the conference for putting together a very enriching experience for all the participants.
