Just a few months ago, Carly Douthit was submitting applications in a frenzy, looking for any summer internship that involved animals.

Ammon Hottensmith has always been interested in critters. Growing up on a small farm in Ohio, the Western Carolina University junior has always been surrounded by them. Everyone is, whether you’re in the hills of the Midwest or the mountains of Appalachia.

Several cattle tanks filled with swarms of tadpoles were all that kept the dusky gopher frog from going extinct. Now, Joe Pechmann, professor of biology at Western Carolina University, is helping the frogs return to their historical range and populations.
