The Qualla Boundary is Lisa Lefler’s second home. Over the course of her decades-long career, the Western Carolina University teaching professor has made countless trips to Cherokee, helping the tribe in any way she can through her expertise in health and anthropology.

For the past 50 years on the last Saturday of September, Western Carolina University’s Mountain Heritage Day festival has honored the music, stories, and traditions of Appalachia.

The Mountain Heritage Center, a museum of Appalachian culture at Western Carolina University, will hold a crafts demonstration and music performance from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 17.
