MAT and MAEd – English Education degrees

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) English Education

The MAT is a program shared between the English and Education Departments and offers students an opportunity to pursue a North Carolina teaching license. This program is designed for college graduates in English (or a very closely related field) to pursue a career teaching English at the high school level. The program focuses on practical skills and subject-specific information to help students successfully transition into the classroom.

Students fulfill requirements specified by both departments: 18 hours in the Professional Core in Education and 24 hours in the English Concentration. The program specifics are delineated in the Graduate Catalog.

Masters of Arts in Education (MAEd)

The MAEd is for individuals who already hold a North Carolina teaching license (typically with a BSEd in English) who wish to become more professionally competitive. The programs focuses on preparing students to understand and critically evaluate the practice of education Also a shared program between the English and Education Departments, the MAEd requires 12 hours in the Professional Core in Education and 24 hours in English. The program specifics are delineated in the Graduate Catalog.
