Dietetic Internship (DI) Program

Nutrition and Dietetics major

 

The WCU Dietetic Internship Program is a 10-month post-baccalaureate program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education and Dietetics Education (ACEND).

Supervised practice rotations and didactic classes are designed to provide 1200 supervised practice hours and meet the ACEND Knowledge Competencies for the Registered Dietitian. DI graduates are qualified to take the national Registration Examination for Dietitians.

WCU Dietetic Interns can complete the DI program in ten months or combined Master of Health Sciences (MHS) in eighteen months. The internship program provides 18 hours of graduate credit toward an MHS degree in Nutrition.

  • The DI program meets on WCU’s Biltmore Park location in Asheville, North Carolina.

  • Admission requirements: DPD GPA of 3.2, DPD verification statement, GRE scores
  • Application Process: National Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System (DICAS) and D & D Digital Computer Matching due February 15, 2018.
  • WCU DI program participates in Prior Assessed Learning (PAL).
  • Students enrolled in the DI Program may be eligible for financial aid.

WCU DI Program Application Process

ADMISSION SELECTION CRITERIA

To be eligible to apply for either Pre-Select or National Match, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Cumulative grade point average/grade point average in Dietetics Program in Dietetics (DPD) coursework - 3.2 minimum GPA
  • GRE scores

  • Volunteer or paid experience in nutrition and dietetics (preferably with registered dietitians in a variety of work settings)
  • Recommendations, Letter of application, and Resume
  • Interview - See latest application guidelines.
  • Selection committee rank based on a live interview with the dietetic internship director, nutrition faculty, and some preceptors (conducted in January for pre-select applicants and in early February for computer-matching applicants).

Application to the Dietetic Internship Program

The WCU Dietetic Internship Program is using the online Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System, DICAS. DICAS will be available early December for Spring 2018 Match. The online application must be completed by 11:59 pm Central Time on February 15, 2018.

The fee to use DICAS is $45 for the first application submitted and $20 for each additional application.

Applicants must also register online for computer matching through D&D Systems and select dietetic internship priority choices by 11:59pm Central Time on February 15, 2018. There is a $55.00 computer matching fee.

Notification Day: April 8, 2018

Acceptance into WCU’s Dietetic Internship Program, requires a WCU Graduate School application simultaneously submitted.

Pre-select Option for Application to the Dietetic Internship Program

The Western Carolina University Dietetic Internship Program participates in a preselect process for up to 6 students per year who meet preselect and admission criteria. The preselect criteria includes:

  • Completion of all DPD requirements from the WCU Nutrition Dietetics Program by May, 2018
  • Graduation prior to entering the DI Program
  • Students enrolled in the WCU MHS program who have completed or will complete DPD requirements by May, 2017

Applicant must complete the online Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System, DICAS application by January 9, 2018 (application forms, including 3 letters of recommendation, letter of application, GRE scores, DPD Verification Statement or Intent to Complete DPD Statement). DICAS will be available on December 8, 2017. Applicants will be notified on or before January 30th, 2018 of acceptance status. The remaining dietetic internship positions will be filled using the national computer matching process.

If an applicant is preselected, the Dietetic Internship Director will provide the applicant’s email address and name to D & D Digital by February 1, 2018. This information will be used to ensure that the student does not participate in national computer matching.

Applicants who are not admitted to the program through the preselect option may apply to other dietetic internship programs including WCU’s Dietetic Internship through the national computer matching process. The deadline to apply for the April match is February 15, 2018.
