Course tutors

WaLC course tutors facilitate small-group review sessions for specific courses, assist students with developing effective study and self-management skills, and act as a liaison between students and faculty.

Writing Fellows

The Writing Fellows program addresses undergraduate writing needs by providing support in classes where faculty members have requested extra help for their students. Fellows work closely with 12-15 students, reading drafts of their papers; writing thorough end notes; and holding individual, thirty-minute conferences to discuss revision strategies.

  • Starting pay: $8.00/hour with increases available based on training, years of service, and leadership roles. 
  • Application deadline: Hiring of writing fellows is typically conducted once a year, but applications are accepted year round.

Supplemental Instruction Leaders

Supplemental Instruction Leaders facilitate active, collaborative review sessions three times per week for historically difficult courses. They attend class with students, work closely with faculty, and plan engaging activities for sessions. 

Employment type: Work-Study or Non Work-Study

Starting pay: $8.00/hour with increases available based on training, years of service, and leadership roles

Time commitment: SI leaders are expected to attend all classes (approximately 3 hours per week), plan and facilitate 3 SI sessions per week (3 hours of planning plus 3 hours for sessions per week), attend a weekly SI leader meeting with the SI supervisor (1 hour per week) and meet with the course instructor weekly (15-30 minutes) for a total of approximately 10.5 hours per week.

Academic Skills Consultants

Academic Skills Consultants (ASCs) are successful students who are trained to deliver interactive learning skills workshops and one-on-one consultations to students at Western. Using guided discussions and hands-on activities, ASCs introduce students to effective strategies for time management, note taking, reading, studying, and test taking. In addition, ASCs represent the WaLC and the University at Orientation sessions and Open Houses. Students chosen to work as ASCs have an opportunity to improve their public speaking and interpersonal communication skills while reinforcing their own successful learning strategies.

  • Starting pay: $8.00/hour with increases available based on training, years of service,  and leadership roles.

International Student Consultants

International Student Consultants (ISCs) are primarily writing tutors who will facilitate one-on-one or small group sessions with International and ESL students, with emphasis on developing conversational skills, understanding the American university system and faculty expectations, and familiarizing students with available resources.

  • Participate in a weekly "International Conversation and Coffee Hour"
  • Employment type: Work-Study or Non-Work Study
  • Starting pay: $8.00/hour with increases available based on training, years of service, leadership roles, and participation in the annual WaLC Associates' Retreat.

Office Assistants

Office Assistants (OAs) play an integral role in the efficient functioning of the WaLC. Students who are chosen to work as OAs have an opportunity to develop and to practice communication, organization, and other professional skills that will benefit them in life beyond college.

  • Employment type: Work-Study only
  • Starting pay: $7.50/hour with increases available based on training, years of service, leadership roles, and participation in the annual WaLC Associates' Retreat.
  • Application deadline: Hiring is typically conducted during the first week of class each semester, but applications are accepted year round.

Lab Report Tutor

Lab report tutors provide one-on-one writing tutoring for students writing lab reports for science classes. These tutors must demonstrate an understanding of the structure and language used in lab reports. Preference is given to strong writers who possess the vocabulary to talk about writing with students who are struggling to compose and edit their work.
