Applications Take Just a Few Minutes!

For full consideration of an application students should:

-Plan to complete the application in one sitting. Applications left open after 24 hours will partially record and erase a respondent's information.

-Have an updated copy of a resume

-Have official/unofficial copies of high school transcripts [F-L.E.A.R.N.] OR state/community college transcripts [T-L.E.A.R.N.]

-Have official/unofficial copies of any standardized test scores, F.L.E.A.R.N. only 


-Majoring in one of the STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math/Computer Science)

-Minimum SAT 1000, F.L.E.A.R.N. only

-Minimum ACT 24, F.L.E.A.R.N. only

-Minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0

-Associates Degree from a state/community college, T-L.E.A.R.N. only

-Quality and clarity of written responses on the application


Students can expect application reviews to be ongoing through April and May 30, 2019. The L.E.A.R.N. selection committee will be reviewing applications on a bi-weekly basis.

If a student's online application meets the minimum qualifications of consideration, the committee will extend an invitation for an interview to determine formal acceptance.

Students will be contacted via the email they provided on their application. Please ensure that the information you enter in the application is accurate.



Students accepted to interview with the committee will be informed of a decision no later than 48 hours after the interview.

Students formally accepted to L.E.A.R.N. will be notified by email, and will have 48 hours to either accept or decline the invitation.

Students invited to interview for a position in L.E.A.R.N. will have two options to interview with the committee:

1. Students can schedule a SKYPE interview during a pre-scheduled time from April to May, 2019. The L.E.A.R.N. Program Coordinator will arrange the interview dates and times on an individual basis.

2. Students can submit a digital portfolio showcasing:

-At least one academic and/or personal accomplishment from the last 5 years.

-An example of when you demonstrated personal initiative, motivation, and/or perseverance, and how it benefitted you.

-Articulation of how you expect LEARN to benefit you in 4 years, and beyond.

-Articulation of why you should be considered for an undergraduate research apprenticeship and a scholarship.

*Students will have 1 week from the date of invitation to interview to submit their portfolio for consideration.

F-L.E.A.R.N. Applicants

Thank you for your interest in the F-L.E.A.R.N.™ living-learning community at Western Carolina University. The 2019/2020 academic year is now accepting applications. F-L.E.A.R.N.™ is available only to rising first-year students (i.e. current high school seniors).

T-L.E.A.R.N. Applicants

Thank you for your interest in the T-L.E.A.R.N.™ learning community at Western Carolina University. The 2019/2020 academic year is now accepting applications. T-L.E.A.R.N.™ is available only to transfer students coming to WCU (i.e. transferring from a state or community college).

Please Note: When entering information in the fields of the application, please be sure to enter that information exactly as specified. Otherwise, the submission process will not work; an error message in red will appear next to the field that has been incorrectly entered or left blank. To fix this problem, simply re-enter the information and submit it again. DO NOT leave your application pages without completing and submitting. Your application will be incomplete and you will be unable to return to the same one (i.e. you'll have to start over).
