Coaching Pathways

We offer two pathways for students to engage in OAR Coaching Services:

  1. The Strategies To Enhance Performance (STEP) Coaching Program and
  2. Check-in Sessions. Both of these options have similar outcomes, but differ in process based on the student’s individual needs and goals.

STEP Coaching Program Check-In Sessions
  • Contact OAR to schedule an initial appointment.
  • Attend an initial appointment to develop goal(s).
  • Complete a STEP Program Agreement.
  • Attend up to 5 focused coaching sessions to work on specific goal(s).
  • Complete a questionnaire at the end of the program.
  • Students can re-enroll in the STEP Program to work on additional goals(s), or utilize Check-In Sessions as needed for ongoing support.
  • Contact OAR to schedule an appointment.
  • Attend a short coaching session to address a specific challenge.
  • Complete a brief survey after the session.

Quick Facts About Coaching

  • Coaching is voluntary. The student initiates and actively participates in the process.
  • Coaching focuses on concrete skills and strategies with measurable goals. Coaches may refer students to campus resources for skill-based training based on their individual needs.
  • Coaches ask questions without judgement; together, the student and coach design how the student will accomplish their goal and be held accountable.
  • Coaches do not provide therapy to students. To inquire about a counseling appointment with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), call 828.227.7469 or stop by the office (225 Bird Building). The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Coaches do not tell the student what to do. The student and coach work through the coaching process together to determine a plan for how the student can make positive changes and progress towards accomplishing their goal.
