Community Engagement for Faculty & Staff

WCU Faculty and Staff Service

Engage Your Students. Enhace Their Experience. Impact Our Communities.

Whether you are planning a service project for a class, searching for more information about engaged research, or hoping to find a volunteer opportunity for yourself, CCESL is here to help. We offer consultations for service-learning and class service projects. We also have a library of service-learning resources for checkout. We can give you suggestions for volunteer opportunities to integrate into your course or to participate yourself!

Service-Learning Course Designation

Service Learning  courses (SLC) are course-based, credit-bearing types of experiential learning in which students participate in an organized service activity with a community partner that meets community-identified needs. Service-learning can be integrated into courses through a variety of service types, not just volunteering. If you are interested in teaching a SLC designated course, visit our SLC page for more information and resources. Learn more.

Service Opportunities for Any Course

Whether you teach a service-learning course or not, service opportunities can be integrated into any course. Connect service to course content, or just encourage your students to become involved in their community! Include any CCESL service opportunitity or educational event in your syllabi that you see on our Engage page.

CCESL Van Rental

CCESL has two 12-passenger vans that are available by request to be used for community outreach or experiential education activities. Any WCU faculty or staff member is eligible to request and drive the vans. Use this free and convenient resource to enhance your students' engagement with course content or to complete a service project yourself! Learn more.

Community Service Leave (CSL)

Community Service Leave is a State benefit that many WCU employees are eligible to take advantage of - it allows you to get paid for doing community service. Whether you participate in a service opportunity coordinated by CCESL, or an opportunity on your own, make sure you are utilizing this State benefit. Look for "Faculty/Staff Days of Service" on Engage, which are all CSL eligible.

If you need suggestions for CSL opportunities or would like to plan a CSL outing for your department, contact us!
