Agency Description: WATR is a community-based volunteer organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the Tuckasegee River and its tributaries.

Training: Any necessary training will be provided

Time Commitment: Flexible

Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements: Interest in water quality and environmental sciences. In addition, communication and social media skills to market WATR by informing the community about our accomplishments. Ability to conduct research and work well with others. Projects vary from simple tasks, group service sessions, incorporation of local water resources in semester papers, and capstone projects. Freshmen who are exploring academic majors are welcome to inquire as to how majors can be linked with real-world application of classroom learning.

Volunteer Involvement: Collecting and analyzing data, especially by biology, geoscience, computer science, and social science students. Work with landowners to reduce erosion and pollution. Plant trees or participate in cleanups (typically Saturdays in the winter months and Wednesdays in the summer months, 3 hour time commitment). Greet and assist at meetings (typically held every other month in evenings). Help with stream clean-ups. Assist in public communications by writing articles for the newsletter, developing public surveys, helping with elementary school water quality teaching, producing videos, and documenting monitoring projects.
