Agency Description: Meals on Wheels provides nutritious to the elderly, homebound and disabled Haywood County residents who are unable to prepare nutritious meals for themselves. Volunteers are needed to deliver meals on a regular or substitute basis.

Training: Volunteers will receive on-the-job training to learn their route and will be introduced to their clients.

Time Commitment: Delivery time is approximately two hours, usually from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Most volunteers have a regular delivery day and route. Substitute drivers may work various days to fill-in for regular drivers.

Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements: The Meals on Wheels volunteer should have an understanding of the elderly and be able to empathize with the medical conditions of their clients. Meals on Wheels provides not only a nutritious meal but also personal contact. The volunteer may be the only person the recipient sees all day long so a positive attitude is essential. In case of an emergency, volunteers are trained to immediately call 911 and then the Program Coordinator to contact family members and the social worker.

Volunteer Involvement: Volunteers will deliver nutritious meals to the elderly, homebound and disabled on a regular or substitute basis. They may also visit their recipients after all meals on their route have been delivered.
