Location: The T.M. Rickman Store is located at 259 Cowee Creek Road, next to Cowee Elementary School. It is 7 miles north of Franklin, NC, by NC Hwy 28.

Agency Description: The Friends of the Rickman Store is a group of volunteers helping the Mainspring Conservation Trust to preserve the cultural heritage of Cowee, and specifically focused on re-opening the Store for the community. The project includes: Cultural and Educational Programs; the gathering of memories from elders of the community; a Gardening Lectures/Workshop series and a Tailgate Market to promote local food production and consumption; a Living Classroom and Community Garden for elementary school students; and a venue for local crafters and artists for demonstrations and sale of their work.

Training: We will provide orientation on the history of the store and the community, and information on the goals of Mainspring and our community projects.

Time Commitment: Activities require an average of 4 to 6 hours commitment per event.

Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements: History, education, and business background and interests can be beneficial.

Volunteer Involvement:

Preparing and setting up the store for activities.
Preparing and setting up historical displays.
Videotaping and recording memories from elders.
Guiding visitors, local merchants, and the general public.
Helping with the organization of cultural events.
Contacting artists, designing and distributing advertisement.
Helping with the design and maintenance of a webpage.
Designing informative and educational materials.
Designing and maintaining a flower/herb garden around the store.
Helping with educational programs for children.
Helping with the design of a business plan for the store.
Helping with the beautification of the Historic District.
