Take Hwy 107 South (away from Sylva) just past Cullowhee Valley Elementary School and turn right on Speedwell Rd. Go ~1 miles past the Rec Center; when you come to a fork in the road, go to the right on Tilley Creek Rd. Follow Tilley Creek for ~4.5 miles, and look for the AHFP sign on the right. Follow the middle road until you get to the cabin on the right.
Agency Description: Appalachian Homestead Farm & Preserve is a 501(c)3 nonprofit tax-exempt organization, founded in 2005 to preserve this historic farmstead and to inspire by example the preservation of mountain farmlands, viewsheds, and lifeways through conservation, education and advocacy.

Training: We have a wide range of expertise on our board and will provide training and safety instruction as needed.

Time Commitment: Flexible. As little as 2 hour segments or a longer period. This is a good place to complete course requirements for service learning or to conduct botanical surveys or write your thesis.

Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements: No special skills needed. We will be thrilled with people with no experience but willing hearts and hands, or we are an ideal place for people with existing knowledge and skills in construction, design, historic buildings and design, journalism, drama, outdoor education and hiking.

Volunteer Involvement: Volunteers can help with a variety of tasks & projects, ranging from gardening at the historic farmstead, constructing & maintaining trails, helping out around traditionally-constructed buildings, & more.
We have had a lot of WCU volunteers since our inception in 2005. Most keep in touch with us and come back long after they have graduated and gone on to careers, marriages and babies. This speaks, we think, to the relationship students make with us and the special spirit of this  place.
