CCPD Operations
As a part of WCU’s coordinated effort to minimize the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Center for Career and Professional Development is currently operating remotely.

The CCPD staff will be working our regular schedule (Monday-Friday, 8 am – 5 pm) and are available to provide services for WCU students, alumni, faculty, staff, and employer partners. You can reach us by emailing specific staff members or contacting our mainline at 828-227-7133 or email at careerservices@wcu.edu.

Students and alumni

Can I still make an appointment?
Yes! Our counselors are offering virtual appointments using Zoom or phone. You can book an appointment for assistance on resumes, cover letters, personal statements, interview prep, and creating strategies for your job/internship/graduate program search. 

Current students can schedule appointments online:

  1. Login to MyWCU 
  2. Click “Get Assistance” blue button on the upper right-hand side
  3. Select “Center for Career and Professional Development” from the drop-down
  4. Select “Career Assistance”
  5. Select which type of appointment you are coming in for
  6. Click “Next”
  7. Select which location you prefer
  8. You can select a specific staff member or you can click “Next”
  9. Then select what time period you would like an appointment (use the arrows to navigate)
  10. If you do not see an appointment time available, contact our office at careerservices@wcu.edu or 828-227-7133 
  11. Then confirm your appointment and put in any notes that you need the counselor to know
  12. You will receive an email from your counselor with information for the Zoom appointment.

Alumni, please email careerservices@wcu.edu to schedule a Zoom or phone appointment.

What about drop-ins?
Virtual drop-ins for quick questions and document reviews are available via email at careerservices@wcu.edu

If you are submitting documents for review, such as resumes, cover letters, and personal statements, please tell us the types of opportunities/fields you are applying for so we can provide targeted feedback. We will do our best to get you feedback within one business day and will let you know if this won't be possible.

If questions or feedback would benefit most from a quick call, our peer mentor will schedule a time to contact you via Zoom.

What are other services available to me?
Our website is full of resources and information for you. A few good starting points are our student resources and career resources for diverse populations pages.  

Our Professional Handbook is also available online and has great instructions on resumes, cover letters, interviewing, and more. 

JobCat2.0 is our online job board where we post full-time, part-time, and summer jobs and internships. 

Big Interview teaches you the in’s and out’s of interviewing. It has video curriculum on interviewing from basic preparation to fielding difficult questions, as well as resume how to’s and training for negotiations. There are practice interview questions, and you can choose a mock interview based on experience level, skills you want to discuss, industry and more. 

Focus2 is an online assessment to help you identify majors and careers that fit with your interests, values, skills and personality. It also has a wealth of information to learn more about potential careers. (You can always schedule an appointment with a counselor to go over your results!)

Vault is a career exploration resource that lets you learn more about industries and professions of interest. The resources include career e-books, articles, blogs, videos, day-in-the-life summaries, and more.

I’m currently interning, what should I do about my internship?
We encourage you to be in communication with your internship supervisor regarding their organization’s plans, including any opportunities for remote work should they close their physical office.

Can I still job search given the current impacts of COVID-19?
Yes! As we all adjust to this fluid situation, hiring practices will likely slow. However, many employers are moving forward with their hiring needs. You may need to dedicate more time than usual to finding opportunities.

Need help finding resources or developing a search strategy? Need to practice your video interview skills? Schedule an appointment with one of our counselors!

Faculty and staff

Is the CCPD still available to provide resources for my class or student group?
Yes! We are happy to provide resources for your students, including live hosted presentations, recorded videos, PowerPoints, and other materials. Please contact your liaison or careerservices@wcu.edu.

What’s the best way to reach staff for collaborations and programs?
Email is the easiest way to reach us, you can contact a specific staff member or email our general inbox, careerservices@wcu.edu, and your email will find its way to the right person. We are also available by phone at 828-227-7133. 

I’m the faculty supervisor for student interns this semester and have a few questions.

How can I still recruit WCU students for my opportunities?
All on-campus career events and individual recruiting sessions have been canceled until further notice. Please continue to post your internships, seasonal jobs, and full-time jobs in JobCat2.0. We will be actively promoting JobCat2.0 as a resource to our students.
