The ceremony capped more than a week of activities to honor WCU’s new chancellor and his wife, Susan. Centered on the theme “Defining Our Future in Pursuit of Distinction,” installation week activities highlighted and celebrated the accomplishments of students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners.

Monday, March 19-30

Paint the Town Purple
Western Carolina University students and organizations teamed up with Cullowhee, Sylva and Dillsboro area business owners to help decorate their storefronts in Catamount Purple and Gold in anticipation of the installation.

Faculty Scholarship Celebration
Visitors checked out  the scholarly and creative achievements of Western Carolina faculty and staff members. Books and articles, music scores and audio, art, presentations and the like were on display in the Hunter Library.

Saturday, March 24

WCU Cares: A Day of Service
WCU students, staff, faculty and community members gave back to the community in a day of service in support of a variety of types of projects, locations and times. Service partners included: Full Spectrum Farms, Project C.A.R.E., Habitat for Humanity of Haywood County, Adopt-a-Highway, Sylva Community Gardens, Community Table, Tuckasegee Community Food Pantry, Stop Hunger Now, Base Camp Cullowhee, Campus Kitchen Garden and Manning Boys Home in Jamaica.

Sunday, March 25

Valley of the Lilies Half Marathon & 5K
Race registration included a training program, technical running shirt and 'goody bag' for both the 5K and the Half Marathon. Beginners and experts, runners and walkers alike participated. This event was presented by MedWest and coordinated by the WCU School of Health Sciences and the Department of Campus Recreation & Wellness.

Monday, March 26

Fount-astic Festival | View Slidehsow
Students, faculty, staff and community members launched a new WCU tradition, "Firing up the Cata-Fount," where the water fountain at Central Plaza is turned back on for the season.

Campus Recreation Intramural Sports sponsored the Belcher Open, a disc golf tournament.

The Whee Hours
Downtown Sylva and Dillsboro merchants and restaurants offered special deals all day long to WCU students, faculty and staff who show their CatCards.

Undergraduate EXPO
The work of some of Western Carolina's best and brightest students was on display at the annual Undergraduate Research Expo, including a poster session and reception. Student presentations were held at various campus venues all day long March 26 and 27.

Tuesday, March 27

Breakfast with the Belchers
Students, faculty and staff joined David and Susan Belcher for a Dutch treat breakfast in the upstairs section of the Courtyard Dining Hall.

A pregame festival featuring games (cornhole, ladderball), music (90.5 Radio), inflatables and food (popcorn, cotton candy, pizza) was held prior to the afternoon's home baseball game.
Members of the WCU Purple Thunder drum line marched to Hennon Stadium to watch the Catamounts take on Kennesaw State in baseball action.

Between first and second innings: "Belcher Open" trophy presentation and pictures with winners.
30 minutes after the game: Belcher's Movie at UC Theater.

QEP Pathways
In celebration of the fifth anniversary of development of the Quality Enhancement Plan, academic departments and supporting units showcased their implementation of engaged and integrated learning and demonstrated how the QEP and its focus on curricular and co-curricular synthesis have improved teaching and learning.
