Hunter Library Commitment to Privacy

Hunter library is committed to maintaining the confidentiality and security of your personal information related to your use of library resources and services. Hunter library only requires you to provide personal information when that information is necessary to enable the library service or staff to provide you with the requested service.

How Personal Information is collected

Hunter Library uses Google Analytics to collect data on how its users use its web site.  More information on how Google collects and uses this data is available at https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/6004245?hl=en

In order to obtain access to our resources when not inside our library, we ask users to identify themselves and their library affiliation by logging into our systems. Information collected may include:

  • Library card number
  • Username
  • Email address

Users of the Hunter Library website will need to enable cookies. A cookie is a small file sent to the browser by a website each time that site is visited. Cookies are stored on the user’s computer and can potentially transmit personal information. Cookies are often used to remember information about preferences and pages visited. Users can refuse to accept cookies, can disable cookies, and remove cookies from their hard drives. Our servers use cookies solely to verify that a person is an authorized user in order to allow access to licensed resources. We do not share cookies information with external third parties, unless we are required by law or policy to do so. Some third-party library vendors may use cookies for their sites.

How Personal Information is protected

Hunter Library considers your user data (any of the information we collect listed above) to be confidential personal information. Access to your personal information which is maintained in the Hunter Library system is restricted by password control to authorized staff of Hunter Library and the Western North Carolina Library Network.

The data we collect is used by our staff to identify the library affiliation and eligibility of patrons to use the library resources. It may be anonymized and aggregated for reporting purposes.

Most online databases available through library are operated by third-party vendors through license agreements with Hunter Library. We do not automatically transfer your personal information to these third-party vendors. However, some vendors may collect data through “opt-in” processes over which the library has no control.

Requests for Personal Information

Privacy of library records in North Carolina is governed by NC Statute 125.19  (http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/enactedlegislation/statutes/html/bysection/chapter_125/gs_125-19.html ) Western Carolina University and Hunter Library will not provide or disclose your personal information to any individuals or organizations other than Western Carolina University staff members performing their job duties, except as required by law.

Violations of Policies and Laws Prohibited Are Not Protected

Users must comply with established institutional and library policies and with the law while using Hunter Library resources and services. Nothing in this statement prevents Hunter Library from performing its duties in relation to: compliance with and enforcement of established University or library rules or policies; compliance with legal obligations; protection of the library facilities, network and equipment from harm; or prevention of the use of the facilities and equipment for illegal purposes. Hunter Library reserves the right to electronically monitor its public computers and network, and/or reveal a user’s identity to institutional authorities as it deems appropriate pursuant to the policies of Western Carolina University, the laws of the State of North Carolina, and the laws of the United States of America. Staff members are authorized to take immediate action to protect the security of data, facilities, computers, and the network.
