Biography

<b>PT, DPT, ScD, OCS, SCS, FAAOMPT<br></b><br>Dr. Sullivan joined the Department of Physical Therapy at Western Carolina University in Spring 2021. Dr. Sullivan graduated from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT with his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science in 2012 and Doctor of Physical in 2015. He went on to complete the Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency program at Sacred Heart University in 2016 before completing the Orthopaedic Fellowship and Sports Rehabilitation program with Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles, CA in 2018. Upon completion, Dr. Sullivan attended Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, where he graduated with his Doctor of Science in 2020 with a dissertation on the application of psychological theory and techniques in physical therapy practice. Dr. Sullivan has attained his Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) and Sports Clinical Specialist (SCS) certifications and is a Full Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT). He also holds various certifications related to orthopaedic and sports physical therapy, which is he primary area of clinical expertise, practice, and teaching and research interest. Dr. Sullivan lives in Asheville, NC with his wife, Emily, and two dogs, Ellie and Blue.

Teaching Interests

Dr. Sullivan is involved with the PT 951: Musculoskeletal I, PT 952: Musculoskeletal II, PT 874: Integrated Clinical Education IV, PT 875: Integrated Clinical Education V, PT 899: Doctoral Project, PT 954: Clinical Reasoning I, and PT 955 Clinical Reasoning II courses, and he participates as a supervising clinician in the Mountain Area Pro Bono Health Services clinic. Dr. Sullivan is actively involved in teaching research with an emphasis on clinical reasoning and expanding the skillset of physical therapists within their scope of practice including advancing physical therapy education related to Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and general health and wellness, such as nutrition, sleep and recovery, exercise and activity, breathing, and mindset and stress management strategies.

Research Interests

Dr. Sullivan has various research interests related to orthopaedic and sports physical therapy, the application of psychological theory and techniques in physical therapy practice, and general health and wellness education and promotion.
